A Social Media Primer

social-profit-landscape-sml

I am a big fan on Charlie Cook’s blog and today I received an email about a social media video.  Normally, I would delete this email and go on to some of the other MANY tasks that have seem to taken over my life.  However, I decided to watch the video and I am glad I did.

Don Crowther has created a set of videos about “the best” way to participate in social media.  Now, I am sure that everyone has their own “best way” of participating in social media, however, Crowther has drilled down the focus to simply making money from these sites; not directly of course.  I have to admit, the video that I watched, The Social Profit Landscape, was pretty awesome.  Yes, I did already know much of the material, but it was a great refresher and would put a newbie on the right track.  You can even download a really cool mind map of the most influential social media sites around.

If you are interested in engaging further in social media or you’re finally ready to get started check out http://bit.ly/bq0ps0.  I am sure you will learn a lot.  I sure did.  If you have the time check out the other videos in the series and let me know what you think.

Update Your Website on the Cheap

If we are going to assume that your website is your storefront to the entire world, we should also assume that you don’t want it to look crappy.  Crappy websites just don’t do as well as those that have a professional and polished appeal.  But what if you don’t have the cash or the interest in doing a complete overhaul of your website, you can still do a style upgrade.  There are two quick and fairly cheap upgrade options.

1.  You can get a new header.

2.  You can update your theme.

Upgrading with a New Header

A new header can totally change the look of your website or it can just give your site a new edge.  Either way, you can get a header created for a low as $50.  If you have the time to fool around with design programs such as Photo Shop or Microsoft Expression Design, you may be able to create a header on your own for free.

Remember, your upgrade doesn’t have to be a completely new design.  One of favorite bloggers, David Risley at davidrisley.com, modified his header to include photos.  This one little change added a different look to his site while still keeping with his overall design.

Upgrading with a New Theme

If you are using WordPress or another content management site like Joomla to run your site, you can use a new theme to change the look of your website.  Most times, using a new theme is going to give you al totally different look, so you many only want to go this route if you are looking for something completely fresh.

There are lots of free themes on the web and you can use these as you please.  However, remember that someone could be running the exact same design.  If that’s okay with you, great.  If you are trying to build up your specific brand, however, an easily recognized free theme may not be the way to go.  You can get a custom theme created at Elance.com, oDesk.com, or 99Designs.com.  Each of these sites allow you to pick a budget so that you can stay well within your comfort zone.

What have you done to update your website?  How long before you wanted a new design?  Tell me about it below in the comments section.

Think Outside the Box

outside the box Marketing is an extremely important part of keeping your business profitable, but who said it had to be boring.  In fact, creative and out-the-box marketing methods are often very powerful because they are unexpected.  Take a look at the five un-conventional marketing methods below and pick one or two to actually try out.

1.  Contests

Contests are easy to put on and can definitely generate buzz about your business.  The key to a great contest is giving away something that people want.  Something new and in-high demand always works great.  If you can get your hands on something that fits the bill, you may just have the perfect contest prize on your hands.

In order for your contest to work, you are going to need to spread the word.  If you are using television or radio advertising this will be easier.  If not, however, you can leverage your community newspapers and other media outlets along with your personal network and social media to spread the word.  If you aren’t going to employ a mass communication method, you may want to make the contest run a bit longer so that you have an adequate number of respondents.

Depending on the type of business you have, you can advertise the time and day of the announcement and invite everyone that entered the contest to come out.  This works great for retail stores because you can pack the store and make some residual sales.  Either way, running a contest will definitely increase interest in your business.  Don’t forget to get permission to add all of the participants to your email list.

2.  Free Samples

Everyone wants to get something for free and if you can offer something great for free, you just might be able to gain some new paying customers.  You can go about giving away free samples in a few different ways.

  • Partner with a Business

A TCBY franchise partnered with a local bank in my community.  They would leave coupons for a free cone in the bank for their customers to take.  I took one as did some of the other people in the bank on that day.  You can partner with a business to offer free coupons to your store.  This works great and if you take the time to target the right business, you can almost ensure some of the freebies coming back as paying customers.

  • Follow the Crowd

Depending on what you sell, you may be able to rent a cart and take your freebies to the people.  This works great for food!  If you decided to give out free samples this way, you should make sure to have some full-sized, full price items on hand for those that want more.

  • Pick a Specific Day

If you are are going to advertise your free sample, you can maximize the buzz by offering it on just one special day.  Maybe you will add the free sample info to a radio ad that you already do.  Making a special event out of your free samples can bring people out, but you will need to give people enough notice to take advantage.  Make a special event out of giveaway and send out press releases telling the local media all about it.

3.  Post Cards

Lots of businesses send out postcards as direct mail, however, not many people get the response of business owners that do it this way.  Keep a cool backdrop in your place of business and when people come in, whether they make a purchase or not, you ask them to stand in front of the backdrop and take a picture.  A week or so later, you send the picture as a postcard to the client.  Clients love this because it is unexpected and a lot of fun.  You will be surprised how many people actually keep these cards.  To add a boost to this marketing method, you can add a coupon or special offer to the back of the postcard.  This is one coupon that probably won’t be lost.

4.  National Special Events Registry

I have to admit, when I heard this marketing method I thought it was pretty awesome.  The National Special Events Registry is the organization that keeps track of all the special months, weeks, and days in the US.  You can create a special event and submit it to the National Special Events Registry for inclusion in their materials.  This is free and you can use the special event to increase awareness, sponsor special events, and unify your community all around your specific business and industry.  If you want the National Special Events Registry to actually recognize your month, week, or day, you can pay $20.  Not a bad investment for such a powerful marketing tool.

5.  Free Consultation

Offering free consultations doesn’t really seem like an out-of-the-box marketing method, but when you do it in real guerrilla fashion, it is.  Instead of having someone come in to learn more about what you can do for them, actually do it for them in the limited time of the consultation.  Most times people don’t always take the time to go to consultations because they don’t really gain much in the process.  Instead of doing the same ol’, same ol’, really help the prospective clients.  Set a limit, 30 minutes or an hour, for the consultation and use that time to actually solve the persons problem.  Some of the people may not need your services after the consultation, but most will return.

Marketing with Business Directories

KBD Icon Logo Revision Kind of like the yellow pages, business directories, are a way for you to get your business in front of the people that use the directory.  In fact, there are a number of business directories on the web and in print.  Some of these directories do have a fairly large user base, therefore, you may receive a few calls, but there are others that don’t seem to produce much of anything.

We have all heard that google has killed the yellow pages.  I agree.  Less and less people are looking to the yellow pages to search for local businesses.   But before you decide that business directories are a waste of time.  You need to consider a small sub-set.  There are business directories created by and for a specific group of people who want to send their business to others in this specific group.  If you attend a church, are a member of a fraternity or sorority, or volunteer with a non-profit group or charity, you may be eligible to advertise in their directory.  This sort of directory is different because there is a common thread unifying the businesses.  Many people think, “Why give my business to just anyone when I can give it to someone just like me”.  This is why these directories can be so powerful.  Members of the organization can relate to you because there is something that you all share.  Its kind of like niche marketing and we know what a powerful strategy that is.

How to Find these Directories

If you aren’t sure that any of the organizations that you are a part of produces a business directory, ask!  If a directory does exist, find out how you can get listed.  If there is no directory, find out how you can start one.  This is a great way to meet others that may be interested in working with your business.  An easy way to get a directory started is to ask members of your group to drop off business cards.  This cuts down on the legwork but can get the directory up and running.  You can also use a free website, such as www.wordpress.com to start a web directory for your group.

KBEUSA.com

If you aren’t successful at finding a business directory among the organizations that you belong and can’t start one of your own, you may want to consider www.KBEUSA.com.  KBE stands for Kingdom Business Enterprises and is a business directory for those who believe excellence, diligence, and integrity are the pillars on which a strong business is built.  I chose to use this directory because it aligned with many of my own personal convictions and the leaders are dedicated to promoting the directory.

You can join KBEUSA for a yearly subscription fee, however, if you are just starting your business or have already maxed out your marketing budget you can obtain a free account for a limited time.  There are a number of different features available with each account.  For example, you can link back to your website or blog, include your custom logo, and receive rating and reviews from customers.

Don’t Forget to Follow-Up

We all get in a tizzy about the presentation and the lunch meeting.  We make sure we look professional, we have all of our best materials to share, and we are ready to fight objections and hesitation.  When the meeting is over and the presentation ends, we don’t always operate with the same enthusiasm.  However, it is through follow up that many of the deals are done and sales are closed.  It is imperative that small  business owners take advantage of the follow-up.

“If the people are going to buy, they are going to buy.  I don’t need to send a thank you card or token of appreciation for taking my meeting.”  Well, I guess you are right.  But I am sure that the business owner that does respond with follow-up is going to have a better chance of closing the deal.  Follow-up is what often sets you apart from the pack.  In fact, this is an area that many small businesses can beef up.

Maybe your business doesn’t call for lunch meetings or sales presentations, how can you practice effective follow-up?

  • Respond quickly to any inquiry.  If a prospective client takes the time to fill out an email form or leave you a message, you should attempt to respond within an hour.  When a person goes this far in their search for information it is usually because they are interested in buying NOW.  Don’t let your competitor’s focus on follow-up beat you out of a sale.
  • Set up a system.  If you are out of the office and there is a need to follow up with a prospect, how do you know?  For those of you that have brick and mortar stores, empower your employees to contact you via email or text message for follow-up.
  • Make contact at the completion of a job.  Once the client has given you the opportunity to work for them, you should write a note.  Not only is snail mail pretty charming, small gestures like this help you get referrals.

REMEMBER:  Follow-up is marketing!  You can make a real impact with prospective customers through your follow-up.  Effective follow-up is another reason for people to talk about how great you are.  And even if you don’t get the sale, if you followed-up properly, the prospect may call you back in the future.

Have you found follow-up to make a difference in your business?  What methods do you use for following up with a client?

3 Ways to Maximize Your Web Presence

I know, I know…everybody needs a website.  Well, that simply is the truth of the matter.  With all of the free or low cost options available to the small business owner there is no reason that you should be absent from the web.

If you are ready to take the plunge and go ahead and get on the internet, you need to follow a few ground rules.

1.  NO FLASH

While Flash is very glamorous and gets lots of oohs and aahs from your family and friends, it can be death to your small business website.  In order to run Flash, each of your site visitors has to have Flash installed on their computer.  If they don’t have the program or are visiting your site from a computer where they don’t have access to make additional downloads, such as a library or office, they simply wont be able to see your site.

Entrepreneur Magazine lists 7 reasons why you shouldn’t use flash on websites:

  1. Foregoing Flash keeps your costs down.  Flash development can cost you up to double the amount of an HTML or JavaScript site.
  2. Flash sites are SLOW.  A flash site can take two to 10 times longer to load than the average website.
  3. Like I said above, Flash is not always accessible to all of your visitors.  Why take the chance of blocking out an eager site visitor.
  4. A flash site is going to block out users from smartphones, webTV users, and some visitors coming from behind a firewall.
  5. Some visitors think that Flash is reserved for advertisements.  If your visitors see Flash when they first arrive to your site, they may assume that it is an ad.
  6. Flash can deter return visitors who have to site through a Flash animation every time they visit.
  7. Website spiders cannot access Flash sites.  Your search engine optimization efforts are compromised when using Flash.

2.  POLISH YOUR COPY

If you aren’t a wordsmith, hire a professional to write your webcopy.  Typos and poor sentence structure do not convey your level of excellence or attention to detail.  Your design is going to be important, but if your visitors can’t get through the first paragraph of your home page, they probably aren’t going to stay very long.

3.  NO CLUTTER

When it comes to creating a beautiful and functional website, you need to understand that less is more.  Lots of clutter and moving objects don’t make a cool website.  They actually make your site look amateur and deter your visitors from staying on the site.
